Corrosion behavior of AA3003 friction stir welded joints

This work focuses on the corrosion behavior of the friction stir welded joint of aluminum alloy 3003. In order to quantify the quality of FSW joints, the corrosion in the welded joint and the base metal was compared. A gravimetric and thermodynamic study was carried out to determine corrosion resistance. Three aggressive media based on three solutions (sodium chloride, hydrogen chloride, and ethylene glycol) at four temperatures (25°, 45°, 65°, and 85°C) were tested. The results showed that temperature has a strong influence on corrosion rates, which are higher in the metal than in the FSW joint. The presence of ethylene glycol considerably reduces the rate of corrosion, its effect is more marked on the FSW joint. The adsorption of ethylene glycol on the surface of the base metal and that of the FSW joint follows the Langmuir isotherm to form a monolayer on the surface of both samples.
