The CrTiSiCN coatings were prepared by multi-arc ion plating technology on 316L stainless steel and TC4 alloy. The tribological behaviors of CrTiSiCN coatings sliding against Si3N4 balls in seawater were tested by a ball-on plate tribometer. The results showed that the coating had a dense and compact structure consisting of nanocrystallite/amorphous phases. The hardness for the coatings on 316L and TC4 were about 35.8 and 34.3 GPa, which could be attributed to nano-sized grain and distributed amorphous phases. The CrTiSiCN coatings had a positive effect on improving wear and corrosion resistance of the substates in seawater. The main wear mechanism for the coatings in seawater was plastic deformation.
